DeLay mayday?
Crackling signal over the radio: "Mayday, mayday. This is Majority Leader to Nation's Leader. Do you read, Nation's Leader? I'm going down..."
House Majority Tom DeLay, beset by the ethics scandal that won't go away and by the blowback from his own attacks on the independent federal judiciary that he won't let go of, may be in real trouble. Clue number one is this ringing endorsement, from our President (aka "w," "Blue-tie" or "The Smirk"*), as quoted in today's NYT:
By the way, did you know that President Bush and I are friends? Our level of friendship is the one I have with people whom I believe are the worst president in U.S. history and whom, if I ever met them, I would probably find to be personally distasteful. Friends don't let friends drive the country into the ground.

"Sure," [White House spokesman Scott] McClellan said, when asked if the president considered Mr. DeLay a friend. He went on: "I think there are different levels of friendship with anybody."Is it just me, or is this the kind of endorsement you hear from the General Manager of the last place baseball team when he says that "the manager's job is safe."

Ha, good post, but one quibble: Bush is driving the country into the ground? Lately the biggest problem on Americans' minds is whether to buy their next SUV in gold or silver.
The state of America is better than it ever has been. We have longer lives, more life-saving medicines, better technologies, more money, cleaner water, more food, more choices, etc. The world continues to get better too - less poverty, more equal rights, less hunger, etc. ad infinitum. America isn't going anywhere but up. Perhaps the up trend has slowed a bit in recent years, but it's still up.

Sarcasm noted. Just tryin' to say that things aren't as bad as people make it out to be and regardless of how terrrible a President anyone is, it doesn't matter, because what matters in this country is the American people, not politicians.
